About MossyBridge.org

A reference archive on covered bridge history, timber truss engineering, and wooden bridge preservation in Canada. The archive documents construction methods, structural systems, and the historical record of wooden bridge engineering from the 19th century to the present.

What This Archive Covers

MossyBridge.org focuses on three interconnected areas: the structural engineering of timber truss systems used in covered bridges, the construction practices that shaped how those structures were built in Canada, and the preservation challenges that determine which of them survive into the present.

The archive does not cover decorative woodworking, covered bridge tourism schedules, or general travel content. The focus is on the technical and historical record — how these structures were designed, what materials were used, how they were built, and what is required to keep them standing.

Geographic Scope

The primary geographic focus is Canada, with particular attention to New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario, where the largest concentrations of surviving covered bridges are found. New Brunswick's covered bridge inventory — approximately 58 structures — is the most extensive in the country and provides the most detailed documentation base.

References to bridge engineering history in the United States are included where relevant to understanding design systems that were also applied in Canada, particularly the Howe, Burr, and Town truss configurations that originated in the northeastern United States and spread north through the border region.

Editorial Approach

Content in this archive is written in an informational register. The intent is to document accurately rather than to advocate. Where preservation decisions are discussed, the analysis is based on documented outcomes rather than general arguments for or against heritage retention.

Articles are updated when new information becomes available through provincial heritage surveys, engineering assessments, or published scholarship. The update date is noted on each article.

Company Information

MossyBridge.org is operated by Timber Frame Heritage Research Ltd., a federally incorporated company registered in New Brunswick.
